Farm produce used in new Boschendal Deli and Gift ranges
Two new ranges, available for sale in the Farm Shop and Gift Shop at Boschendal, continue the agricultural tradition which is at the heart of this iconic Cape winelands establishment. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded in 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories.
The Boschendal Body Care product range make use of the olives, herbs and oils available on the grounds and in the mountain areas surrounding the farm. “It all started with the organic lavender grown in abundance here and from there extended into the use of fynbos and other indigenous herbs and plants,” say product developer Kim Mehmel. Soaps, oils, creams and scrubs are for sale and as soon as production is steady, further outlets will be investigated.
The existing vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable and herb gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle.
“This cornucopia of fresh produce just cried out to be canned, bottled, juiced and spiced up, and it became a reality with the launch of our Farm Shop and Deli explains Kim.
With a new kitchen set up across the road from the main venue, and local people from Pniel being employed to assist, the fruits of the team’s labours are already for sale. Over and above the delectable pantry of fruit and veg, the range includes cordials, jams, chutneys and fruit-based Liqueurs with plans afoot for a dried fruit selection to be launched later.
Boschendal’s age-old reputation as a beacon of “boere” hospitality seems set to continue.
