The Cape colony has its roots as a refreshment station; a welcome stop for weary travellers where food, wine and hospitality were never in short supply. Similarly, the Cape Dutch farms that fanned outwards from the harbour at Table Bay offered some of the finest hospitality in the land, and the ‘Cape table’ was always laden with fresh farm produce and delicious local cuisine.

On Boschendal today little has changed, with our restaurants offering an array of authentic culinary experiences. First and foremost our focus is on providing flavourful and nourishing farm-to-table food; celebrating the bountiful produce of Boschendal and the Franschhoek valley with menus that shift with the seasons. Much of the fresh produce you’ll find on your plate is sustainably grown right here on Boschendal Farm, and where possible we source other ingredients from farms and small producers in the surrounding winelands.

In fact, across our restaurants we work hard to keep food miles to a minimum: three-quarters of the ingredients on our daily restaurant menu are sourced within 30-kilometres of the farm.

With such a wonderful array of local produce on offer, it’s little surprise that our team of skilled chefs, under Executive Chef Christiaan Campbell, conjure up a mouth-watering feast of dishes at restaurants across the estate.

The Werf Restaurant

Our flagship restaurant, under the leadership of executive chef Christiaan Campbell.

Situated in the beautifully revamped original cellar of the Manor House, the focus at The Werf Restaurant is on contemporary farm to table dining using the finest local, seasonal and ethically-sourced ingredients. Expect fragrant fermented breads, slow-roasted ribs and brisket sourced from the herd of Angus cattle on Boschendal Farm, or house-smoked trout, pasture-reared poultry and accomplished desserts.

The Deli

What was once the original waenhuis, or wagon house, of Boschendal has been sensitively restored into our attractive Deli.

This family-friendly destination serves delicious breakfasts, lunch, and afternoon tea with tables both in the cosy restaurant and scattered out under the oak trees.

Rhone Homestead Restaurant

Situated next door to the Cellar Door and Winery, the Rhone Homestead is open for our Buffet lunches every Sunday and during the week for group bookings of 20 and more.

All our dishes pay homage to our heritage as a traditional Boland farm with recipes passed down through generations of Boschendal cooks.

Picnics

Boschendal has long been famous for its generous picnic baskets enjoyed on the spacious estate lawns, and during the warm summer months the estate gardens provide the perfect setting for a picnic lunch in the shadow of the Simonsberg.

We have two picnic venues about 1km apart, namely Rhone Rose Garden Picnics and Werf Picnics.

Our classic Boschendal full-service picnic has relocated to the Rhone lawns adjacent to the Rhone Homestead, Cellar Door and Winery. This area is the wine-making and wine-tasting hub of Boschendal. Rhone Picnic baskets can be enjoyed at carefully-laid out tables or on a picnic blanket under the shade.

Our Werf Picnics are a more casual affair under the trees on the Pavillion lawn. This area is adjacent to the main werf area and our farm-to-table food hub. We welcome our guests to bring their own blankets, chairs and tables and enjoy a leisurely afternoon under the trees with family and friends. Werf picnic baskets include simple, nutritious food being primarily made from our natural farm produce and wholesome items made on Boschendal.

Cellar Door

This is the oldest building on the estate located under the shade of one of the oldest oak trees on the Estate. Allow us to introduce you to the pleasures of our exceptional wines as well as or secret stash of award-winning limited releases with an informal sensory encounter. Our friendly hosts look forward to sharing their wealth of wine knowledge and stories of the people that shaped Boschendal as they guide you through a tasting.

During winter enjoy a delicious pizza from daily at our Cellar Door. Choose from a Chicken pizza R125, Vegetarian pizza R115 or Beef pizza R125. Time: 10:00 – 16:00.

Manor House Wine Tasting

The historic Cape vernacular Manor House dates back to 1812, and is home to the new Manor House Tasting Room, offering premium tastings and pairings.

An inventive and highly decorative feature of Cape Dutch homes is the wooden screen with louvers that could be shifted open or closed. Now, it effectively separates the three beautifully designed venues - the Agter Kamer, Exclusive Lounge and Chaise Lounge, which can be used for premium tastings, private functions and meeting rooms.

The Farmshop & Butchery

The Farmshop & Butchery stocks a range of products including Boschendal’s own pasture-reared Angus Beef, Boschendal pasture raised eggs, just picked produce from our food garden, fresh farm bread, artisanal jams, home-made preserves and local olive oils.

Boschendal at Oude Bank

Boschendal at Oude Bank, a bakery, bistro and farm shop in the heart of Stellenbosch, opened its doors in 2017. After refreshing the space originally occupied by Schoon de Companje, Boschendal at Oude Bank brings the Boschendal farm to the Stellenbosch CBD and continues to provide locals with wholesome and sustainable produce. The café, with its detailed décor, seasonal menus and innovative offerings provides visitors with a vibrant and authentic customer experience. The Boschendal team is passionate about supporting sustainability-minded local farmers and producers. This ethos comes through in both the food served and produce sold in the shop.
